Beth Hoeckel hipped me to Longmont Potion Castle about two years ago, telling me to "get ready to get obsessed" in
the process of doing it. She & I share a similar sense of humor, and she was absolutely right to think that I
would love LPC. The "phone work" isn't exactly mean-spirited or angry, it's bewildering and infectious. After finding
a new release I hadn't heard (Vol 7), I wrote to the person responsible to tell him how much I loved his calls, and after
looking at my website, he suggested that I interview him. SO I DID JUST THAT on 07/03/2010.

Whoa, July 3rd. Do you have any plans for the big day tomorrow?
Just restin'.

Do you like fireworks? Do you make a point of having or seeing them?
Sure I do, but I find I'm usually preoccupied by the other goings-on during those things. Or maybe I should say unusually.

How do you feel about America?
After moving from Colorado to California after so long, I'm pretty much feeling the extent of America at this point. Like if I can't hack
it here, I might have to leave the U.S. I think I'd at least have to stay coastal to be able to enjoy the degree of civil liberties that exist here.

What were you like as a child? Where did you grow up?
I guess I was shy sometimes, many times just acted ridiculously, and was always musical. After being born near Austin, TX,
I grew up around Denver, CO.

Relaxin' (laxin' again) at home.

Do you currently have any pets?
2 cats, Mummy and Napkin.

Are you married?
My girlfriend and I each went through brief marriages in our teens, just for no apparent reason. Neither of us are very interested in going through a wedding
again anytime soon.

Describe your house for me. Is it messy?
It is organized. Anybody who knows me would tell you that it's all tidy. There's a recording studio in there, too, so I make sure everything
works and is in its place.

I know that some of your calls are to celebrities, but I'm convinced that the track Butt Bowel is Candy Clark from American Graffiti. Is this true?
No, but last month, Candy Clark and Cindy Williams were at a screening of that movie at the Orpheum Theatre. Candy was very eager to hand out her autographed
photos, like you basically couldn't leave without taking one of her pictures. But yes, she sounds exactly the same as the random woman in that call. I'm glad
that the woman in that call, that even she herself laughed at it.

Besides GG Allin, Eddie Money & Sidney Poitier, what other celebs have you called (that might not have the track named after them)?
Just some that didn't fly, like Scott Baio. I kept telling him I was setting up some big party, and that I was sending a helicopter down to pick
him up, and I needed about $1000 for fuel. He was just all, "okay, whatever, you do that."

Did you call GG Allin any other times, besides the call that was released?
There are just a couple snippets of me placing collect calls to him. I also still have some letters from him.

Do you have any calls that you've released that you DON'T like?
Yes, there is some filler in there. Usually not too much, though. I think Volume 4 probably has the most filler, despite having some great
stuff on there.

Do you still have a land line?
I finally cancelled it just last week. Right now I'm recording LPC 8, which is actually the 14th release, and the whole thing is done using internet
telephone. Which is a first for me.

Is LPC 8 almost done? Is it any different than the other releases?
It's at about 65 minutes right now. I think it's sounding sort of modern (laughs). I think it will turn out being reasonably funny.

If LPC 8 is the 14th release, what are the other releases beside Late Eighties Vein? Point me to a internet discography if necessary, I can't find one.

There was also a single, a video, and some compilations. They are listed at longmontpotioncastle.com/merchandise.html.

Do people still order the CDs from you?
I actually just switched the D.U. catalog to download-only (noisetent.com/ducat.html). But yes, the LPC albums still get ordered.

Your tracks seem to be widely available for illegal download, does this bother you?

I'm not really sure.

The other day I called a store where a girl works that I have a crush on and asked if they carried "jelly bracelets". Do you think this is a good dating
technique? I also gave her a book about the Process Church Of Final Judgment, but I think I only managed to creep her out.

That first part I can see getting some play.

You mentioned that you liked my Father's Day card for this year, how was your relationship with your father?
I never really got along with him. It was mostly negative things that got expressed at home, or nothing at all. I later learned that I have
half-siblings scattered across the world, and none of them talk to him, either. Your card was just so straight-up offensive, and handmade, I
was like, thank you.

Where do you live now?
Los Angeles, near Eagle Rock, CA.

Do you like living near Eagle Rock? How do you find the people?
Yes I do. There are semi-large houses, with rare moments of silence, but then you can also go enter chaos at any time.
I like folks around here, but there are some ridiculous people around here, too.

Do you have hobbies? Do you still make music?
I feel like prank calls are my hobby. I consider myself to be a guitar player, recording artist,
music recorder...and office worker (laughs).

When you were making the calls, did you play them for others, perhaps outside of your friend group? Did you ever find that people would say, "oh,
you have a lot of time on your hands"? I only mention this because it's happened to me, but I'm not watching LOST on DVD, etc.

Um, I think I saw 1 or 2 reviews that said something like that.

What do you do for a living?
I sit alone at a computer all day in a 1-person office. I get inquiries and assignments via email and phone. It's totally isolated. I'm just in
there, with a straight-on view of the Hollywood sign, during the weekdays.

I know there are some LPC videos, was there a plan for a movie? If so, what happened to it?

These 2 guys I know are convinced that LPC would be a successful TV show. We met with MTV last week and they immediately rejected it. They told us they
have more than enough "guy" programming, and that they need more female-oriented content right now. And 10 years ago this other guy
also made another pilot that flopped. So, you know, whatever. I will always like working with audio, so I still do that.

I love your quote regarding LPC that it's "dumb but not stupid". Do you think that this is something that everybody can understand?
I had to say something in that interview. And by the way, I really don't like the way any of my online interviews have turned out so far. But I know
that's something you can change with your website, because it really is good. As far as understanding goes, I just have no explanation for those tapes.
You know, it's wild to me that other people still enjoy them.

IS Julius liquid food?
What?

I think of your calls as very different from others, but have you ever listened to Great Phone Calls or Just Farr A Laugh? If so, what did you think?

Thanks...yes, I heard the 2nd one. It's good, and I also met those guys. Neil Hamburger I've seen but not heard as far as his phone recordings.

Is Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion > Black Metal by Venom?
I'll go with Celtic Frost. Especially that song "The Usurper". Man, it just kicks so much ass. It literally pile-drives you as you listen.

What music are you listening to right now?
I don't really know too much about brand new stuff. Current music would be Witch Hunt, 400 Blows. Otherwise, there are really just way too many to mention. I've always
avidly listened to/created music, and never burned out on it.

Are you a vegetarian?
Yes, since I was 14 I have been. Punk/HC bands, especially from the UK, influenced me with that. I had a couple friends who changed over too, but they gave it up. I stayed with it.

What are your favorite foods?
Rice, bread, Indian food, pizza, Mexican food, tofu, eggs, peanut butter, beer.

Do you drive a car? What type is it?
I have a '95 Chevy Lumina. It's pretty cool, though. The windows are tinted, and the stereo has CD, satellite radio, regular radio, 32 GB USB iTunes (5,000 songs),
plus an aux 1/8" input...in case I ever want to play a keyboard or something through the car speakers.

Do you have a favorite movie? If so, what is it?
Muriel's Wedding, Spinal Tap, Borat, these are just some of my favorites. One thing I am usually terrible at is remembering movie titles.

How do you sleep, I mean, how many hours a night to you get generally?
6-8 hours. Sometimes I take a Xanax to help me sleep.

Have you ever been in a fistfight? Is so, please elaborate.
I have been sucker punched before. Just being a belligerent teen, saying anything I felt like at parties, etc. I got clocked 1 or 2 times. That was
years ago, though. I am a pacifist type.

Have you ever been to Seattle, WA? What did you think of it?
Yes. I thought it had some very picturesque and peaceful areas. It almost seemed like a combination of SF and Denver, maybe. And it has an amazing
library. There were especially hostile panhandlers there, but they didn't detract from it.

Have you ever been to Cleveland, OH? What did you think of it?
No.

Have you ever been to Santa Fe, NM? What did you think of it?
No.

Have you ever been to Westcliffe, CO or Salida, CO? If so, what did you think about them?
No, but I spent a couple of months in Sedalia, CO. It is a very small town. You could see it all in a matter of minutes.

Do you spend a lot of time on the Internet? If so, what do you most enjoy looking at? Are there any blogs or websites that you follow?
A good bit of time, yes. I look a lot at rateyourmusic.com, ebay.com. I often google a band name on a blogspot to check out old and new music.

THANKS LONGMONT POTION CASTLE!
